Dragon Ball Z Wins as the World's Most In-Demand Legacy Series – Again

Dragon Ball Z has earned its title as the most in-demand legacy series in the world, beating out some of the most popular titles worldwide, regardless of medium or genre.

Parrot Analytics has revealed that Dragon Ball Z won this year's 6th Annual Global Demand Awards for Most In-Demand Legacy Series of 2023. Dragon Ball Z was the only anime series nominated in the category, beating out many other extremely popular titles, including Mr. Bean, On The Buses, Seinfeld and Star Trek: The Original Series. Parrot defines a legacy series as a series that ended more than 20 years ago.

Dragon Ball Z's win marks a return to form for Akira Toriyama's popular anime adaptation. The series previously won the 2021 edition of Most Wanted Legacy Series. Parrot Analytics says it uses a data-driven algorithm that defines demand as tracking search queries, streaming and downloads, social media traffic, previews of trailers and clips, and even tracking data from illegal anime streaming and data torrenting sites. By assigning undisclosed weights to these categories, "demand" is calculated and titles are ranked accordingly.

Dragon Ball Z and Jujutsu Kaisen Beat Out Even Non-Anime Franchises in 2023

Dragon Ball Z wasn't the only anime success story at this year's annual Global Demand Awards. Jujutsu Kaisen won World's Most Wanted TV Series this year and similarly showcased anime's global appeal, beating out massive live action titles like The Last of Us. Dragon Ball's continued success is something Akio Iyoku, Toriyama's right-hand man, touched on when he recently recalled his visit to South America years ago. South America was one of Dragon Ball's biggest markets, but Iyoku felt that the popularity of the franchise had declined significantly, prompting serious investment to restore the series to its original glory. Dragon Ball's global reach will expand after Crunchyroll announced that more than 800 episodes across the Dragon Ball franchise will be coming to the UK and France starting this month.

Crunchyroll is streaming Dragon Ball Z, which is described: “Goku – the strongest fighter on the planet – is all that stands between humanity and villains from the darkest corners of the universe. Goku has joined the battle of the Z-Fighters and is traveling to distant realms in search of the magical power of the Seven Dragon Balls!"
