Dragon Ball Z and Reese's Puffs have officially announced a nationwide limited-time cereal campaign to celebrate a major franchise milestone.
A press release teased the collaboration: "Go Super Saiyan with an epic fusion of flavor and fandom as REESE'S PuffS join forces with Dragon Ball Z to unveil limited edition collectible cereal boxes to celebrate the franchise's 40th anniversary." " The cereal boxes feature Goku on the front, while the back comes to life with iconic characters including Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell or Majin Buu. All seven unique boxes will be available from now until May (for a suggested retail price of $5.69 per medium-sized box), with the exclusive eighth box only available at Sam's Club. The announcement confirms what many fans suspected when they saw Dragon Ball cereal packaging at stores like Target, Walmart, Meijer and more. The somewhat unconventional promotional campaign may refer to an example of what Akio Iyoku, known as Akira Toriyama's right-hand man, had in mind when he said that Dragon Ball needed a new impetus in terms of international marketing to challenge the status quo. In his comments, Iyoku added, "I felt concerned that Dragon Ball was not distributed worldwide."
While the cereal boxes are limited to the US, Iyoku's promise applies to viewers in other major anime territories. Fans can enjoy the long-awaited, massive new expansion of Dragon Ball content via Crunchyroll in France and the UK, with 800 subbed and dubbed episodes across Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball. Super has been heading to these areas since February. Notably, the US doesn't have dubbed versions of Dragon Ball Super either, while Dragon Ball Z Kai didn't appear on the platform at all before.
Even so, American fans can enjoy a huge variety of Dragon Ball content on Crunchyroll. The streamer describes the popular Dragon Ball Z as follows: “Goku - the strongest fighter on the planet - is all that stands between humanity and villains from the darkest corners of the universe. Goku has joined the battle with the Z-Fighters and is traveling to distant realms in search of the magical power of the Seven Dragon Balls!"
