The fan art, posted by freelance illustrator @IamTheTrev on X, depicts a scene from the highly successful 2022 film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, in which Gohan gets brutally punted by Cell. The creator Trev (@IamTheTrev) posted a follow-up picture of his source material, an original genga (preliminary sketch in the animation process) from key Dragon Ball animator Kazuya Hisada. Trev’s fan art bears an almost perfect resemblance to the original sketch, although he adds color as seen in the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, which helps demonstrate the elevated forms of both Gohan and Cell during one of their most heated battles of the franchise.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Puts the Spotlight on Gohan's Newfound Power
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero builds up to a massive battle between Gohan and Cell after Gohan has been trying to walk the line between martial artist and family man -- and after Cell has undergone reconstruction by Dr. Hedo and leveled up to Cell Max, a much larger and more destructive version of Cell. Gohan has been struggling throughout the season to defend against a growing Red Ribbon Army created by Commander Magenta (who ultimately recruits Dr. Hedo and therefore Cell Max), revived after his father Goku destroyed it. At the same time, he has been attempting to maintain a semi-peaceful home life while fending off his father’s legacy, as well as his own innate powers.
At the climax of the film and the peak of the final battle, Gohan reaches such a level of innate rage that he’s elevated to Beast Gohan, his highest battle form recorded to date. This form -- silver-haired and emitting pink and purple waves of pure power -- is able to easily defend against Cell Max, no small feat against his own new powerful form.
At the hands of Dr. Hedo, Cell is able to become Cell Max and reach Perfect Form. Perfect Cell Max is close to untouchable in terms of power, easily defeating Goten and Trunks, killing Gamma 2 and nearly fatally injuring Piccolo, the latter of which sends Gohan into Beast form. The iconic battle scenes that resulted between Gohan and Cell Max have become fan favorites for their high-tier animation and rare Gohan and Cell forms, both of which are the strongest in canon Dragon Ball history to date.
